Problem

For each real number kk, define pk(x)=ekx−kxp_k(x)=e^{kx}-kx for all real xx. (a) Obtain a simplified expression for pk′(x)p_k'(x) in terms of kk and xx. (b) Determine all real values of kk for which pkp_k is strictly increasing on the entire real line. Provide complete justification. (c) Determine all real values of kk for which pkp_k has exactly one critical number. Show all reasoning, including any necessary discussion of the existence or non–existence of additional critical numbers. (d) For each kk found in part (c), decide whether the corresponding critical point yields a relative maximum, a relative minimum, or neither for pkp_k. Justify your answer fully in each case.
