Problem

Borax bead test is carried out when the original mixture is coloured. It is done using a clean platinum wire with a small loop at the end. When borax is heated on the platinum-wire loop, a transparent glass-like bead is obtained. The hot bead is brought in contact with the salt until it reacts with fused borax and colour is imparted to the bead. The bead colour is noted.
Colour of the beadIon
Blue-greenCu2+\text{Cu}^{2+}
YellowFe3+\text{Fe}^{3+}
GreenCr3+\text{Cr}^{3+}
VioletMn2+\text{Mn}^{2+}
Dark blueCo2+\text{Co}^{2+}
BrownNi2+\text{Ni}^{2+}
The glassy bead consists of: (1) B2O3+NaBO2\text{B}_2\text{O}_3+\text{NaBO}_2 (2) Na2B4O7+B2O3\text{Na}_2\text{B}_4\text{O}_7+\text{B}_2\text{O}_3 (3) NaBO2+Na3BO3\text{NaBO}_2+\text{Na}_3\text{BO}_3 (4) SiO2+B2O3\text{SiO}_2+\text{B}_2\text{O}_3
