Problem

A coil of inductance 0.10 H0.10\,\text{H} and resistance 50 Ω50\,\Omega is connected in series with a 4.0 μF4.0\,\mu\text{F} capacitor to a 50 Hz50\,\text{Hz} AC mains supply. (i) Calculate the inductive reactance XLX_L and the capacitive reactance XCX_C at 50 Hz50\,\text{Hz}. (ii) Determine the phase angle ϕ\phi (in radians and in degrees) between the source voltage and the circuit current. (iii) State clearly whether the current leads or lags the voltage and by how much. (iv) If the r.m.s. supply voltage is 200 V200\,\text{V}, compute the impedance of the circuit and hence find the r.m.s. current drawn from the supply.
