Problem

A river of width 200 m200\,\text{m} flows uniformly from east to west with a speed of 3 m s−13\,\text{m s}^{-1}. A boat that can move at 6 m s−16\,\text{m s}^{-1} in still water is aimed due north from the south bank. (i) Calculate the magnitude and direction of the boat’s velocity with respect to the ground. (ii) Determine the time taken by the boat to reach the opposite bank. (iii) Find how far downstream from the point directly opposite to the starting point the boat finally lands.
