Problem
A rectangular shop sign is attached to a vertical wall by a single horizontal support rod fixed at one end to the wall and bolted at the other end to the top edge of the sign. The sign hangs motionless. A student’s free-body diagram shows only two forces acting on the sign: (1) the weight of the sign acting at its center of mass and (2) the tension in the support rod acting at the bolted connection. Explain why these two forces alone cannot produce the observed equilibrium, and identify the additional force or forces (with their general direction and point of application) that must be acting on the sign to satisfy both translational and rotational equilibrium.
