Problem

Two long, straight, parallel conductors XX and YY are placed 6 cm6\,\text{cm} apart in air. Conductor XX carries a current of 6 A6\,\text{A} upward while conductor YY carries a current of 6 A6\,\text{A} downward. (a) Using a suitable expression, find the magnitude of the magnetic field produced by conductor XX at the midpoint MM of the line joining the two wires. (b) Find the magnitude of the magnetic field produced by conductor YY at the same point MM. (c) Determine the magnitude and direction of the net magnetic field at MM due to the two conductors taken together. Show your reasoning clearly with the help of sketches. (d) If the current in YY is also reversed to flow upward, find the new magnitude and direction of the net magnetic field at MM. Briefly explain the physical reason for the change observed.
