Problem
Block A of mass 4.0kg rests on a horizontal tabletop. It is connected by a light, inextensible string that passes over a frictionless pulley to block B of mass 2.0kg, which hangs vertically off the edge of the table. The coefficient of kinetic friction between block A and the tabletop is 0.20. Neglect the mass of the string and pulley.
(a) Draw separate free-body diagrams for blocks A and B, labeling all forces.
(b) Using Newton’s laws, derive expressions for the magnitude of the acceleration of the system and for the tension in the string.
(c) Calculate the numerical value of the acceleration of the system.
(d) Determine the tension in the string.
(e) After the system is released from rest, block A slides 1.5m across the table. Calculate the amount of thermal energy generated by friction during this motion.
