Problem

(i) Derive an expression for the de Broglie wavelength of an electron accelerated from rest through a potential difference VV. (ii) Using the derived expression, calculate the wavelength for electrons accelerated through 54 V54\,\text{V}. Take h=6.63×10−34 J sh = 6.63\times10^{-34}\,\text{J\,s}, me=9.11×10−31 kgm_e = 9.11\times10^{-31}\,\text{kg} and e=1.60×10−19 Ce = 1.60\times10^{-19}\,\text{C}. (iii) The Davisson–Germer experiment measured a wavelength of about 0.166 nm0.166\,\text{nm} at this voltage. Determine the percentage difference between the theoretical and experimental values and comment on the significance of the agreement.
