Problem

Two ideal gases A and B are each at the same temperature TT. The gases are monatomic and non-reactive. Respond to the following prompts regarding molecular speeds. (a) Starting from the definition of translational kinetic energy for a single particle, obtain an algebraic expression for the ratio average speed of Aaverage speed of B\dfrac{\text{average speed of A}}{\text{average speed of B}} in terms of their molar masses MAM_{A} and MBM_{B}. (b) Using the expression from part (a), calculate the average-speed ratio for neon (20.18 g·mol⁻¹) relative to xenon (131 g·mol⁻¹) at a common temperature. (c) Discuss two distinct physical assumptions implicit in your derivation in part (a) and explain how violating each assumption could cause deviations from the predicted speed ratio in real gases.
