Problem

A 50.0 mL50.0\,\text{mL} sample of 0.100 M0.100\,\text{M} pyridine (C5H5N,  Kb=1.7×10−9)(C_5H_5N,\; K_b = 1.7\times10^{-9}) is titrated at 25∘C25^\circ\text{C} with 0.100 M0.100\,\text{M} nitric acid. Assume ideal behavior and constant total volume equal to the initial 50.0 mL50.0\,\text{mL} plus the volume of acid added. (a) Calculate the pH of the solution after 10.0 mL10.0\,\text{mL} of the nitric acid have been added. (b) Calculate the pH after a total of 25.0 mL25.0\,\text{mL} of the acid have been added. (c) Calculate the pH at the equivalence point of the titration (after 50.0 mL50.0\,\text{mL} of acid have been delivered). (d) On appropriately labeled axes, sketch the overall titration curve (pH versus volume of acid added). Clearly indicate the buffer region and comment on how the calculated pH values support your sketch.
