Problem

A hockey puck of mass 0.50 kg0.50\,\text{kg} is hit along a smooth horizontal ice surface with different uniform speeds. (a) Calculate the kinetic energy of the puck at speeds 2 m/s2\,\text{m/s}, 4 m/s4\,\text{m/s} and 6 m/s6\,\text{m/s}. (b) On graph paper take v2v^{2} (in m2 ⁣/s2\text{m}^2\!\text{/s}^2) along the xx-axis and KEKE (in joule) along the yy-axis. Plot the three points you obtained and draw the straight line passing through them and the origin. (c) Using the graph, estimate the kinetic energy of the puck when its speed is 5 m/s5\,\text{m/s}. (d) Determine the slope of your straight line and hence verify the mass of the puck from the graph alone.
