Problem

Define the piecewise function p(x)={x2−4x−1,x≠1,0,x=1.p(x)=\begin{cases}\dfrac{x^{2}-4}{x-1}, & x\ne1,\\0, & x=1.\end{cases} Consider the closed interval [−2,4][-2,4]. (1) Part 1: (a) Show that pp is continuous on [−2,4][-2,4]. (2) Part 2: (b) Compute p′′(x)p''(x) for x≠1x\ne1 and simplify your result. (3) Part 3: (c) Determine all xx in [−2,4][-2,4] at which p′′(x)=0p''(x)=0 or p′′(x)p''(x) is undefined. (4) Part 4: (d) Create a complete sign chart for p′′p'' on [−2,4][-2,4] and hence determine the intervals on which the graph of pp is concave up and concave down. (5) Part 5: (e) State the xx-coordinates of any points of inflection of pp on [−2,4][-2,4] and justify each using your work above.
