Problem
A battery in a simple circuit does 180J of work in moving 1.2C of charge through the circuit.
(a) Determine the potential difference provided by the battery.
(b) An electron starts from rest and is accelerated through this potential difference. Calculate the change in kinetic energy of the electron in electron-volts (eV) and in joules.
(c) A small bead of mass 2.0g carries a charge of +3.0μC. If the bead is released from rest and accelerated through the same potential difference (neglecting gravity and air resistance), find its final speed.
(d) Calculate the height through which the bead would have to fall near Earth’s surface (take g=9.8m/s2) to gain the same amount of kinetic energy found in part (c). Comment on the relative scale of electrical versus gravitational energy transfer for small charged objects.
