Problem

A table-tennis ball of mass 40 g40\,\text{g} is struck so that its initial velocity is 12 m s−112\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} at an angle of 45∘45^{\circ} above the horizontal. Use this information to answer the following: (i) Calculate the magnitude of the ball’s initial momentum. (ii) Determine the horizontal and vertical components of this initial momentum. (iii) If the same ball were hit with the same speed but at 30∘30^{\circ} above the horizontal, find the new horizontal component of momentum and briefly comment on the change compared with part (ii).
