Problem

A water pump driven by an electric motor lifts water from an underground tank to an overhead tank situated 18 m18\,\text{m} above the ground. In one operation it transfers 600 L600\,\text{L} of water in 2.5 min2.5\,\text{min}. (Density of water =1000 kg m−3=1000\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}.) Answer the following: (a) Calculate the mass of water lifted in one operation. (b) Determine the work done by the pump in raising this water to the overhead tank. (c) Calculate the average power output of the motor during this operation. (d) Briefly explain the form in which the motor supplies energy and the form in which this energy is stored in the water at the final position.
