Problem

A firefighter places the foot of a ladder 2.5 m away from a vertical wall. (i) If the ladder is 6.0 m long, calculate the height (to the nearest centimetre) at which its top touches the wall. (ii) The ladder is later replaced by another that is 6.5 m long, while the foot remains at the same point on the ground. Determine how much higher (to the nearest centimetre) the new ladder reaches compared with the first one. (iii) Comment briefly on the change in safety reach provided by the longer ladder.
