Problem

Solid calcium carbonate decomposes on heating according to CaCO3(s)⇌CaO(s)+CO2(g).\text{CaCO}_3(s)\rightleftharpoons\text{CaO}(s)+\text{CO}_2(g). At 825 °C the equilibrium pressure of CO2(g)\text{CO}_2(g) above the solids is measured to be 0.220 atm. Answer the following. (a) Write the equilibrium-constant expression, KpK_p, for this reaction and state why any solid phases do or do not appear in the expression. (b) Calculate the numerical value of KpK_p at 825 °C. (c) Predict qualitatively how (i) doubling the volume of the container at constant temperature and (ii) adding 0.50 atm of neon gas at constant volume would each affect the equilibrium pressure of CO2(g)\text{CO}_2(g). Justify your predictions.
