Problem

Two identical copper wires, each of length 3.0 m3.0\,\text{m} and diameter 0.20 mm0.20\,\text{mm}, are available in the school laboratory. The resistivity of copper is 1.7×10−8 Ω m1.7\times10^{-8}\,\Omega\,\text{m}. Using only these two wires, the laboratory in-charge wishes to make a resistor whose value is as close as possible to 1 Ω1\,\Omega without wasting any material. Answer the following parts. (i) Calculate the resistance of one of the given copper wires. (ii) Show, with calculations, how you would combine complete or cut pieces of the two wires in series and/or parallel to obtain a resistance nearest to 1 Ω1\,\Omega. (iii) Determine the exact resistance of your arrangement and compute the percentage deviation from the target value of 1 Ω1\,\Omega. Comment on the suitability of your design.
