Problem

A heating element is to be made from 60 cm60\,\text{cm} of wire having cross-sectional area 0.5 mm20.5\,\text{mm}^2. Two candidate materials are available: Material X: ρ=1.5×10−6 Ω m\rho = 1.5\times10^{-6}\,\Omega\,\text{m} Material Y: ρ=4.0×10−7 Ω m\rho = 4.0\times10^{-7}\,\Omega\,\text{m} (i) Calculate the resistance of the wire if material X is used. (ii) Calculate the resistance of the wire if material Y is used. (iii) Which material is more suitable for the heating element?
