Problem
A 150g sample of an unknown metal is heated to 95.0∘C and then quickly transferred to an insulated calorimeter containing 100.0g of water at 20.0∘C. The calorimeter itself has a heat capacity of 50.0J∘C−1. After thermal equilibrium is reached, the final temperature of the water and metal is 24.4∘C. Assume no heat is exchanged with the external environment. The specific heat capacity of water is 4.18Jg−1∘C−1.
(a) Calculate the quantity of heat absorbed by the water during the experiment. Include the correct sign and units.
(b) Calculate the quantity of heat absorbed by the calorimeter.
(c) Using conservation of energy, determine the specific heat capacity of the unknown metal. Show all steps leading to your answer and report the value with appropriate units.
(d) State the algebraic sign of q for each component (metal, water, calorimeter) and describe how the results confirm the first law of thermodynamics for this system.
