Problem

Three identical, flexible balloons (labeled X, Y, and Z) each contain the same amount of an ideal monatomic gas. The initial conditions for the gas in the three balloons are listed in the table below.
BalloonTemperature (K)Pressure (atm)
X3001.00
Y4501.00
Z3000.67
All balloons are allowed to adjust in volume freely so that the pressure inside remains equal to the listed external pressure at all times. (a) Calculate the ratio VYVX\dfrac{V_Y}{V_X} of the volumes of balloons Y and X. (b) Calculate the ratio VZVX\dfrac{V_Z}{V_X} of the volumes of balloons Z and X. (c) Rank the three balloons in order of decreasing collision frequency of gas particles with the inner surface of the balloon membrane. Justify your ranking using your results from parts (a) and (b) together with appropriate reasoning about particle motion.
