Problem

A 1.5 kg1.5\,\text{kg} cart moves on a straight, friction-free track. While the cart travels from position x=0x = 0 to x=3.0 mx = 3.0\,\text{m}, a horizontal force of magnitude F(x)=4x+2F(x)=4x+2 (Newtons, with xx in meters) acts in the +x+x direction. The cart’s speed at x=0x=0 is 1.0 m s−11.0\,\text{m\,s}^{-1}. (a) Sketch a graph of FF versus xx for 0≤x≤3.0 m0 \le x \le 3.0\,\text{m}. On your sketch, shade the region whose area represents the work done by the force. (b) Determine the numerical value of the work done on the cart by the force as it moves from x=0x=0 to x=3.0 mx=3.0\,\text{m}. (c) Calculate the cart’s speed at x=3.0 mx = 3.0\,\text{m}. (d) Suppose instead a constant 3.0 N3.0\,\text{N} friction force acts opposite the motion in addition to the given F(x)F(x). Determine the cart’s speed at x=3.0 mx = 3.0\,\text{m} in that situation.
