Problem

During a hailstorm, ice pellets (hailstones) strike a horizontal glass roof. Average data for the storm are as follows: mass of each hailstone = 8 g, speed on impact = 15 m/s, and rate of impact = 200 hailstones per square metre per second. Use these data to answer the following for a 1 m2^{2} area of roof. (i) Calculate the total kinetic energy delivered to the 1 m2^{2} area in the first 60 s of the storm. (ii) A popular chocolate bar supplies about 2.0×104 J2.0\times10^{4}\,\text{J} of energy per 100 g when metabolised. Determine the mass of chocolate whose food energy equals the energy calculated in part (i).
