Problem

One mole of a mono-atomic ideal gas (γ=5/3)(\gamma = 5/3) is subjected to the cyclic process A→B→C→A described below. State A: PA=2.0×105 Pa,  VA=0.015 m3P_A = 2.0\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa},\; V_A = 0.015\,\text{m}^3 Process A→B: Isothermal expansion at 300 K300\,\text{K} to VB=0.030 m3V_B = 0.030\,\text{m}^3 Process B→C: Adiabatic expansion to VC=0.045 m3V_C = 0.045\,\text{m}^3 Process C→A: The gas is brought back to state A at constant volume (take WC→A=0W_{C\rightarrow A}=0). (i) Calculate the work done during the isothermal process A→B. (ii) Using the adiabatic relation, determine the pressure PCP_C at state C and compute the work done in the adiabatic process B→C. (iii) Evaluate the net work done over the entire cycle and hence find the net heat absorbed. (iv) State, with justification from your result, whether the cycle functions as a heat engine or a refrigerator.
