Problem

A parallel-plate capacitor with plate area 150 cm2150\,\text{cm}^2 and plate separation 0.50 mm0.50\,\text{mm} is connected to a 12 V12\,\text{V} battery. (i) Calculate its capacitance while the space between the plates is air. (ii) Determine the charge stored on each plate and the energy stored in the capacitor. (iii) Without disconnecting the battery, a dielectric sheet of relative permittivity κ=4\kappa = 4 completely fills the gap between the plates. Compute the new values of (a) capacitance, (b) charge on each plate and (c) energy stored.
