Problem

A block of mass m1m_1 is placed on a smooth incline that makes an angle θ\theta with the horizontal. It is connected by a light, inextensible string over an ideal pulley at the top of the incline to a hanging block of mass m2m_2. (i) Derive an expression for the magnitude of the acceleration of the system in terms of m1m_1, m2m_2, gg and θ\theta. (ii) Using your result, find the acceleration when m1=4 kgm_1 = 4\,\text{kg}, m2=5 kgm_2 = 5\,\text{kg} and θ=30∘\theta = 30^{\circ} (take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-2}).
