Problem
Diamond has a refractive index of 2.42.
(a) Calculate the critical angle for the diamond–air interface.
(b) A ray of light inside the diamond strikes a face making an angle of 35∘ with the normal. Determine whether the ray will emerge into air or remain trapped inside the diamond.
(c) Diamonds are cut so that internal rays frequently meet the faces at angles ranging from 32∘ to 42∘. What percentage of this range of angles will give rise to total internal reflection? Give your reasoning.
