Problem

A rectangular conducting loop contains a 6.0 V ideal battery, an on–off switch SS, and a single 200 Ω200\,\Omega resistor. When the switch is open, no current exists anywhere in the circuit. At time t=0t=0, the switch is suddenly closed, completing the loop. (a) Determine the magnitude of the electric current that immediately begins to flow through the resistor once the switch is closed. (b) Indicate the direction of that current on a clearly labeled line diagram of the loop. Your arrows should show the current on every segment, including through the battery. (c) Calculate the potential difference across the resistor. State whether the end of the resistor that connects to the battery’s positive terminal is at a higher or lower electric potential than the opposite end, and explain how this sign convention is consistent with the arrow directions you drew in part (b).
