Problem

A horizontal pipe carries water through two circular sections whose diameters are d1d_1 and d2d_2. The speed of water in the first section is v1v_1. (i) Derive an expression for the ratio v2v1\dfrac{v_2}{v_1} in terms of d1d_1 and d2d_2, where v2v_2 is the speed in the second section. (ii) Water enters a 7.5 cm7.5\,\text{cm} diameter section at 1.2 m s−11.2\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} and exits through a 3.0 cm3.0\,\text{cm} diameter nozzle. Using your result from part (i), calculate the exit speed. (iii) If the flow in part (ii) continues for 6 min6\,\text{min}, determine the mass of water delivered. Take the density of water to be 1000 kg m−31000\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}.
