Problem

Three chemical reactions are carried out in rigid containers open only to a pressure gauge so that the pressure can change but the volume remains fixed. All reactions occur at approximately 298 K. (a) Rank the reactions from the most negative to the most positive standard entropy change, ΔS°. (b) For each reaction, explain the sign and relative magnitude of ΔS° in terms of matter dispersal, specifically addressing changes in phase and in the total number of moles of gas. (c) Suppose reaction (1) is repeated at 600 K instead of 298 K. Predict whether the magnitude of ΔS for reaction (1) becomes more negative, less negative, or remains the same, and justify your answer in terms of energy dispersal.
