Problem

For a real parameter kk, define the function FkF_k on the interval [1,e][1,e] by Fk(x)=ln⁡x+kxF_k(x)=\ln x+kx. (1) Derive an expression, in terms of kk, for the average rate of change of FkF_k on [1,e][1,e]. Simplify completely. (2) Let ck∈(1,e)c_k\in(1,e) satisfy Fk′(ck)=Fk(e)−Fk(1)e−1F_k'(c_k)=\dfrac{F_k(e)-F_k(1)}{e-1}. Solve for ckc_k in terms of kk and verify that ckc_k actually lies in (1,e)(1,e) for all kk in its domain of validity. (3) Determine the value(s) of kk for which ck=2c_k=2 exactly. (4) Find all real values of kk such that the corresponding ckc_k obtained in part (b) belongs to the interval (1.5,2.5)(1.5,2.5). Justify your result analytically, showing all algebraic steps and any inequalities used.
