Problem

Two capacitors, each of capacitance 4 μF4\,\mu\text{F}, are connected in series across a 100 V100\,\text{V} ideal battery. A third capacitor of capacitance 4 μF4\,\mu\text{F} is then connected in parallel with the existing series combination while the battery remains connected. (i) Explain, with reasons, the magnitude of charge stored on each of the two original capacitors before the third capacitor is connected. Hence find its numerical value. (ii) After the third capacitor is connected in parallel, state whether the charge on each of the original capacitors changes. Give a reason for your answer. (iii) Calculate the charge stored on the third capacitor after connection and state the final charge on each of the original capacitors.
