Problem
A thin conducting strip is used in a timing circuit. During a single test run, the current in the strip is observed to change direction.
• Interval I: From t = 0 to t = 2.0 s, a current of 2.0 A flows toward the right.
• Interval II: From t = 2.0 s to t = 3.5 s, a current of 3.0 A flows toward the right.
• Interval III: From t = 3.5 s to t = 6.0 s, a current of 1.2 A flows toward the left.
(a) Determine the algebraic (signed) amount of charge that passes a fixed point on the strip during each of the three intervals.
(b) Compute the net charge that has moved past the point over the entire 6.0 s test run. State the direction associated with the net charge transfer.
(c) For the complete 6.0 s interval, calculate the average current and indicate its direction.
(d) Explain how the sign of the net charge transfer relates to the directions of current stated for the three intervals.
