Problem

Two stations S1S_1 and S2S_2 are 1.0 km1.0\,\text{km} apart on a straight track. At the instant a train AA starts from rest at S1S_1 with a uniform acceleration of 0.5 m s−20.5\,\text{m s}^{-2} towards S2S_2, another train BB passes station S2S_2 moving towards S1S_1 at 20 m s−120\,\text{m s}^{-1}. Train BB immediately applies brakes and decelerates uniformly at 1.0 m s−21.0\,\text{m s}^{-2}. (i) Calculate the time taken after the start of train AA for the two trains to meet. (ii) Determine how far from station S1S_1 the meeting point is located. (iii) Find the speed of each train at the instant they meet.
