Problem
A body is pulled along a straight horizontal track. The magnitude of the horizontal force acting on it changes with displacement according to the following table:
Displacement interval x (m)
0–2
2–5
5–7
Force F (N)
10
15
–5
(The negative sign indicates that the last force interval opposes the motion.)
The total displacement covered is 7m.
(i) Calculate the work done by the force in each displacement interval.
(ii) Determine the net work done on the body over the entire 7m range.
(iii) Find the average force (magnitude and sign) that would perform the same net work over the same displacement.
