Problem

Two identical small insulating spheres AA and BB are fixed 0.40 m0.40\,\text{m} apart on a smooth horizontal line. Sphere AA carries charge +q+q and sphere BB carries charge +4q+4q. (i) Find the magnitude of the electrostatic force exerted by sphere AA on sphere BB. (ii) A third small sphere CC carrying charge −2q-2q is placed exactly midway between AA and BB. Determine the magnitude and direction of the net force acting on sphere CC due to AA and BB together. (iii) All three charges are now simultaneously doubled in magnitude, and the distance between AA and BB is reduced to 0.20 m0.20\,\text{m} while CC remains at the midpoint. Calculate the ratio of the new net force on CC to the net force obtained in part (ii).
