Problem
The secondary winding of a distribution transformer is designed to deliver a maximum current of 200 A at 230 V (rms). The total resistance of the two windings referred to the secondary side is 0.02 Ω, and the iron loss is 300 W.
(i) For a load current of 200 A at power factor 0.9, calculate the copper loss and the efficiency.
(ii) The designer wishes to restrict the temperature rise by ensuring that the copper loss never exceeds 400 W. Determine the highest current that may be drawn from the secondary while meeting this condition and calculate the corresponding efficiency, assuming the power factor remains 0.9.
