Problem

A compound microscope is assembled with an objective of focal length 0.40 cm0.40\,\text{cm} and an eyepiece of focal length 2.0 cm2.0\,\text{cm}. The distance between the objective focal plane and the eyepiece focal plane is adjusted to 18 cm18\,\text{cm}. The final image is formed at infinity. (i) Calculate the linear magnification produced by the objective. (ii) Determine the angular magnification produced by the eyepiece for a normal eye. (iii) Hence find the overall magnifying power of the microscope.
