Problem

A thin insulating wire is bent into a quarter-circle (arc of 90∘90^{\circ}) of radius RR lying in the first quadrant of the xyxy-plane with its centre at the origin. The wire carries a uniform linear charge density λ\lambda. (i) Derive an expression for the magnitude and direction of the electrostatic force acting on a point charge qq placed at the centre of curvature. (ii) Evaluate the force for R=0.12 mR = 0.12\,\text{m}, λ=5.0×10−6 C m−1\lambda = 5.0\times10^{-6}\,\text{C\,m}^{-1} and q=3.0×10−8 Cq = 3.0\times10^{-8}\,\text{C}.
