Problem

A student observes that when she pedals a stationary exercise cycle in the school laboratory, her feet travel a considerable distance but the cycle does not move from its place. Answer the following questions with reference to this situation. (i) Define displacement and distinguish it from distance travelled, giving one example other than the exercise cycle. (ii) State the scientific condition that must be satisfied for mechanical work to be said to be done on an object. (iii) Using the condition stated in part (ii), explain clearly why the student does no mechanical work on the exercise cycle even though her feet have covered a large distance. (iv) Would the student be doing work on her own muscles while pedalling the stationary cycle? Give a brief reason for your answer.
