Problem

A comet on a highly elongated orbit sweeps out 4.0×1014 km24.0\times10^{14}\,\text{km}^2 of area around the Sun in 10 days10\,\text{days}. Treat the areal velocity as constant for the entire orbit and answer the following. (i) Calculate the areal velocity of the comet in km2 day−1\text{km}^2\,\text{day}^{-1}. (ii) Determine the additional time (in days) the comet will take to sweep out a further area of 1.2×1015 km21.2\times10^{15}\,\text{km}^2.
