Problem

(a) Define latent heat of fusion. (b) A beaker contains a mixture of ice and water in thermal equilibrium at 0 ∘C0\,^{\circ}\text{C}. Explain, with reasons, why the temperature of the mixture remains unchanged until the whole mass of ice has melted, even though heat continues to be supplied. (c) Ordinary table salt is sometimes added to ice while freezing a dessert. Explain qualitatively how the addition of salt affects the melting point of ice and why this expedites the freezing process.
