Problem

For an isotropic rectangular solid with initial dimensions l,  bl,\;b and tt, each linear dimension increases proportionally with temperature rise ΔT\Delta T. (i) Without assuming smallness, derive an exact expression for the percentage change in the area of the face lblb when the temperature is raised by ΔT\Delta T. (ii) Show that for αΔT≪1\alpha\Delta T \ll 1, the expression obtained in (i) reduces to βΔT\beta\Delta T where β\beta is approximately 2α2\alpha. (iii) Taking α=4.0×10−5 K−1\alpha = 4.0\times10^{-5}\,\text{K}^{-1} and ΔT=100 K\Delta T = 100\,\text{K}, compute the percentage error introduced when the approximation β=2α\beta = 2\alpha is used instead of the exact relation.
