Problem

A proton is projected with speed 3.0×106 m s−13.0\times10^{6}\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} making an angle of 30∘30^{\circ} with a uniform magnetic field of magnitude 0.20 T0.20\,\text T. (i) Determine the pitch of the helical path followed by the proton. (ii) Calculate the time taken by the proton to complete 1010 full turns of the helix. (iii) Find the axial distance travelled by the proton during these 1010 turns. (iv) If instead of a proton an alpha particle (charge +2e+2e, mass 4mp4m_p) is projected with the same speed and angle, compare its pitch with that of the proton and justify your answer quantitatively.
