Problem

For the parabola y2=4axy^{2}=4ax with a>0a>0, a point P(k,6)P(k,6) is known to satisfy two conditions: (i) Using the fact that PP lies on the parabola, establish a relation between kk and aa. (ii) Write the distance formula for PFPF and, using the given numerical value of PFPF, obtain a second relation between kk and aa. (iii) Solve the simultaneous relations from parts (i) and (ii) to determine the admissible positive values of aa and the corresponding coordinates of PP. (iv) Verify for each solution that PFPF equals the perpendicular distance from PP to the directrix, thereby completing the check that PP indeed lies on the parabola.
