Problem

Capacitors C1=1.5 μFC_{1}=1.5\,\mu\text{F}, C2C_{2} (unknown), and C3=4.0 μFC_{3}=4.0\,\mu\text{F} are connected in series to an ideal 24 V24\,\text{V} battery. After the circuit reaches equilibrium, the potential difference across C3C_{3} is measured to be 6.0 V6.0\,\text{V}. (a) Determine the magnitude of the charge on each capacitor. (b) Using the result from part (a), calculate the value of the unknown capacitance C2C_{2}. (c) Compute the electric potential energy stored in capacitor C2C_{2}. (d) Verify that the algebraic sum of the energies stored in all three capacitors equals the total energy delivered by the battery.
