Problem

A long straight solenoid of length 10 cm10\,\text{cm} with 500 turns carries a steady current that flows from left to right along the top face of the coil. (i) Draw a neat diagram to show the magnetic field line pattern both inside and outside the solenoid. Mark the directions of the field lines and label the north and south poles of the solenoid. (ii) From your diagram, state two similarities between the magnetic field produced by a solenoid and that of a bar magnet. (iii) Explain how the polarity of the ends of the solenoid can be predicted from the direction of current in the turns of the coil. (iv) Identify the region where the magnetic field of the solenoid is nearly uniform and give one reason for your choice.
