Problem

A mass–spring system has mass 0.5 kg0.5\,\text{kg} and spring constant 200 N m−1200\,\text{N}\,\text{m}^{-1}. The system is driven by a variable–frequency motor. (i) Calculate the frequency at which the amplitude of oscillation is expected to be maximum. (ii) The spring constant is then reduced by 20%20\% while the mass remains the same. By what percentage does the resonance frequency change?
