Problem

A venturi meter is fitted to a horizontal water pipe of diameter 5.0 cm5.0\,\text{cm}; the throat diameter is 2.0 cm2.0\,\text{cm}. A mercury manometer connected between the inlet and the throat shows a difference in mercury levels of 15 cm15\,\text{cm}. Take densities: water =1000 kg m−3=1000\,\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{-3}, mercury =13 600 kg m−3=13\,600\,\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{-3}, and g=9.8 m s−2g=9.8\,\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-2}. Calculate the volume flow rate of water through the pipe.
