Problem

A motorcycle and its rider have a combined mass of 150 kg. While cruising on a straight highway, the motorcycle’s speed is 90 km h⁻¹. (a) Convert the motorcycle’s speed to metres per second (m s⁻¹). (b) Using the speed found in part (a), calculate the motorcycle’s translational kinetic energy. Express your answer in scientific notation to three significant figures. (c) If the rider opens the throttle and increases the speed by 10 %, determine the corresponding percentage increase in translational kinetic energy. Explain whether this percentage increase depends on the mass of the motorcycle–rider system.
